We are often asked what does my Home Owners insurance cover?
The answer to that question depends on how your policy is written. You are either covered for “Named” causes of loss or “Special” causes of loss.

What is the difference?

- Named causes of loss are listed in your policy as the ONLY covered causes of loss. Anything that occurs not on that list is not covered.

- Special coverage protects you from EVERYTHING BUT a specified list of perils noted on the policy.

CAUSES OF LOSS

Named Causes of Loss

1 Fire or Lightning
2 Explosion
3 Windstorm or Hail
4 Riot or Civil Commotion
5 Aircraft
6 Vehicles
7 Smoke
8 Volcanic Eruption
9 Vandalism or Malicious Mischief
10 Theft
11 Falling Objects
12 Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet
13 Accidental Discharge or Overflow
14 Rupture of Heating, Air Conditioning or Sprinkler Systems
15 Freezing
16 Sudden and Accidental Damage from Artificially Generated Electrical Current

Special Causes of Loss

Include coverage for the 16 Named causes of loss and other perils not listed. With Special coverage you are covered for almost any peril as long as it is not listed in your policy. Some of the exclusions are:

1 Ordinance or Law- expenses incurred as a result of any ordinance or law that regulates the construction or repair of property to meet applicable code.
2 Earth Movement
3 Water Damage caused by flood or water originating outside the dwelling
4 Power Failure
5 Neglect if at the time of loss further damage is sustained because the insured neglected to try to save or preserve the property from further damage
6 War
7 Nuclear Hazard
8 Intentional Loss
9 Freezing of plumbing unless the insured used reasonable care to prevent damage by maintaining heat or draining all systems and appliances.

Endorsements can be added to any policy to include coverage for some of the listed exclusions but they must be added at the time coverage is bound.

Special Note

Personal property such as collections or items that exceed the covered value listed in your policy for such items only have the coverage amount listed in the policy. For example: Jewelry and Guns, two very common items that can easily exceed the limits of coverage need to be scheduled individually on the policy for proper coverage.
